Register To Vote Deadline For Primary Just Two Weeks Away

Posted

DeLand, FL - The Florida primary election is just six weeks from tomorrow (July 7) on August 18 and that means time is running out to register to vote or update your registration. Volusia County Supervisor of Elections Lisa Lewis says the easiest way if you have access to a computer is to do it online. "Go to our website, it's volusiaelections.org  at about half-way down the page on the right-hand side, you'll see Register to Vote. If you click on that icon picture, it will take you to the state's online voter registration system." She says you do need your Florida driver's license or your Florida state ID card to get registered.  You can also update information, such as your address or change of party affiliation on thew state's website.

Lewis said for those that don't have a computer at home, you can use a library computer or you can pick up the registration form at the library. You can turn it in at the library and it will be sent on to the Elections Office.

With COVID-19 numbers on the high side in recent weeks, Lewis suggests you consider a mail-in ballot.  "Voting by mail is the easiest and safest way to vote.  We mail it to your house, vote in the privacy of your own home, postage is paid, you drop it back in the mail or when early voting is open you can drop it at an early voting site." She said you can also request a mail-in ballot by calling the Elections Office at 386-736-5930. The first mail-in ballots are going out this Thursday, July 9.

Earlier this month, the Volusia County School Board came to an agreement with the Elections Office on using some schools as polling places. The reason for the change is to make social distancing easier to do in the polling place.  A change of polling place means a change on your voter's registration card. Lewis plans to have the updated voter's registration card in the mail by the registration deadline of July 20. She said that the polling places that are being consolidated to a polling place at a school will have signs directing voters where they need to go to cast their ballot.
