Post-Hurricane Scams Still an Issue, FL Attorney General Says

Posted

Scams aimed at those affected by hurricanes Helene and Milton are still pervasive in Florida, according to an advisory from Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody. The scams are aimed at getting money from those scrambling to find relief and repairs for their homes and businesses after the two hurricanes made their way through Florida in recent weeks.

“Hurricane Milton left a wide path of destruction across Florida, and it is important that everyone who is now beginning the recovery process knows to be vigilant of scams and price gouging, as well as other disaster-related schemes," Moody said of the phenomenon. "Our Scams at a Glance: After the Storm resource contains valuable information for Floridians to help them avoid falling victim.”

Several actions are recommended to prevent falling victim to such scams, including healthy skepticism of those soliciting tree removal services, obtaining written cost estimates, researching any company or contractor robustly, verifying proof of current insurance, and refusing to pay the full cost of the repairs up-front.

Scammers in the wake of a hurricane can often be identified by fake names that resemble real and well-known charities. Those wishing to help hurricane victims through legitimate means can vet organizations through the Better Business Bureau, Give.org, or CharityNavigator.org.
