NSB Golf Club To Be Designated A Local Landmark

New Smyrna Beach, FL - The second reading and public hearing of an ordinance that will designate the New Smyrna Golf Club Course a Local Landmark will be heard by City Commissioners this evening.

Golf course General Manager Gary Wintz is well-versed in the course's history and provided that information for first the Historic New Smyrna Beach Preservation Commission and tonight for the City Commission. He said the course was one of the last designed by famous golf architect Donald Ross, who designed about 400 courses during his career.

Wintz says there are a few reasons why it's important to have the course named a local landmark, including keeping it from being anything else. "It has a lot of history behind it and it's just a well-known course.  Being one of the last courses that Donald Ross did is a pretty important thing."

The course is already listed as a partner on the Florida Historic Golf Trail by then Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner. "There's quite a few courses that Donald Ross was involved in and so they named us to be a member of that and designate us on the Florida Historic Golf Trail."

The Local Landmark designation only applies to the course itself because of it's connection to Donald Ross. The course only needed to meet one of the criteria to be designated but has actually met six out of eight.
