New Smyrna Beach, FL - During tomorrow (March 9) evening's New Smyrna Beach City Commission meeting, a local businessman will be honored. Bob Morrow of Bob’s Automotive is being noticed for 50 years of small business ownership and community service.

Commissioners will also discuss increasing the City Attorney's salary to $147,000. This comes after the every third-year market study, which was completed in January 2021. The actual raise is $4,463 annually or a three percent increase.

A project to install an Environmental Shade Structure to the existing playground area at the "Alonzo" Babe James Community Center will be up for discussion. The Commission gave approval to the project last March.

The County has awarded the City $95,099 for this project. The City is awaiting an executed original and an authorization to proceed once the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) authorizes an expenditure of funds. We anticipate receiving the Authorization to Proceed within 30 days. So far, the city has received a quote of $109,245.56 to complete the project.

Also on the agenda is the approval of a July 4 fireworks display. Staff recommends approval with a cost of  $43,000 for the fireworks display and $9,000 for the barge.  The total of $52,000 is in the approved Leisure Services budget.

Two public meetings are being held tomorrow. The first is a Community Redevelopment Agency meeting at 5 p.m. followed by the regular City Commission meeting at 6:30 p.m.
