Memorial Day Gas Prices Up 6 Cents Over Last Year, Down 40 Cents From 2015

Florida - This Memorial Day brought only a slight increase in Florida's gas prices.

Florida gas prices averaged $2.31 on Monday. That's six cents more than last year's holiday, but 40 cents less than Memorial Day 2015, according to AAA. Florida has the 19th  lowest state average in the country.

In Daytona on Monday, the average for a gallon of regular was $2.29. That was up just three cents from last year.

Originally, gas prices were expected to surge for this holiday weekend, but that forecast changed when OPEC decided to not implement any further cuts to oil production last Thursday.

Mark Jenkins, a spokesperson for AAA, says, "Oil prices declined last week, allowing gas prices to stabilize in time for one of the most traveled Memorial Holidays in 12 years."

Jenkins says gas prices should remain within 10-20 cents of their current levels for the summer, but there could be a surge if an unexpected refinery outage or hurricane impacts supply and demand.

Looking forward, the Energy Information Administration forecasts that a gallon of gas will average $2.40 nationally this summer and $2.34 for Florida.
