Ponce Inlet, FL - Volusia County's Marine Science Center will now be closed until further notice.
That notice came from the county earlier today (June 29th), announcing the MSC will temporarily close and re-evaluate social distance practices. There will also be a "deep-clean" of the facility.
However, employees will still continue on-site activities to care for the sick and injured animals in their care.
According to Gary Davidson, a spokesperson for Volusia County, the decision to shut down the center was made after a contracted staff member tested positive for COVID-19. That staff member learned about the results of their test over this past weekend
Davidson said the county is working closely with the Florida Department of Health on any testing or self-quarantine measures that may be needed.
The closing also comes about three weeks after the Marine Science Center began a phased reopening to the public on weekends.
