HHPD Investigating Accidental Officer-Involved Shooting

Holly Hill, FL - Holly Hill Police Chief Steve Aldrich  said  that an accidental shooting involving a police officer is under investigation. Reports say that he accidentally discharged a personally owned firearm. A bullet went through the floor into the apartment below. A mother and her children in that apartment were not injured.

The family that lives below the police officer at the Charleston Way Apartments reported the incident at 6:40 a.m. yesterday (January 29). Whe officers arrived, the father showed them a hole in the wall just above a bedroom door frame. His wife and two children were in the room when it happened. She said she heard a loud bang and wood and plaster fell out of the wall. She said it smelled like fireworks afterwards.

An officer knocked on the door of the officer's apartment directly above the family but got no response.  Another officer was able to contact him. He explained that he'd taken a rifle from hanging on a wall. He said his finger must have been on the trigger when he tripped and the gun went off. He told the investigators that he didn't think the bullet would have gone all the way through the floor and ceiling.

The responding officers took possession of the rifle from the officer.
