Halifax Health Sees Record Number Of COVID-19 Hospitalizations

Daytona Beach, FL - Halifax Health is reporting a 63 percent increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations in just five days, with 93 coronavirus patients reported on Friday. On Monday, the number was 57, which broke the previous record of 52 set on January 18, 2021. 

According to hospital spokesman John Guthrie, 14 of the 93 are on ventilators and 90 percent of those hospitalized are unvaccinated.

Data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services shows that from July 20 to 21, an additional 525 people in Florida were hospitalized with COVID-19, an almost ten percent increase in 24 hours.

Advent Health Central Florida is also showing an increase in hospitalizations. Last Thursday, officials said there are more than 700 patients across their system hospitalized due to COVID-19.

The Florida Department of Health's most recent update shows that a total of 59% of Florida's eligible population — anyone age 12 and older — has been vaccinated against the virus.

As of the most recent weekly update for the week ending July 22, 54 percent of Volusia County's population over the age of 12 is vaccinated. There were 2,144 new cases reported for a positivity rate of 21.6 percent. Flagler County has about 60 percent of the population over the age of 12 vaccinated. There were 392 new cases for a positivity rate of 22.1 percent.
