Half-Cent Sales Tax Voting Deadline Next Week

DeLand, FL - Initially, the mail-in ballots for the county’s half-cent sales tax vote were coming in steadily. Now, Lisa Lewis, Volusia County Supervisor of Elections, says the returns are tapering off.

As of this past Saturday, Lewis said the count was 72,545, which is only about 18 percent of the more than 400,000 ballots mailed out. Compounding the issue is the fact that about 1,500 people did not sign the outside of the envelope. Lewis said that if the outside of the envelope is not signed, your vote will not count.

Lewis reminds voters that your actual ballot has to be in the hands of the elections office by 7 p.m. on Election Day, May 21. That doesn't mean postmarked by May 21. It has to be in the office by that time.

Lewis said if you don't have your ballot in the mail by this Thursday, May 16, your best bet would be to go to your city or town hall. There are collection boxes at 16 city and town halls in Volusia County. You could also take your ballot to the elections office in DeLand.
