Daytona Beach, FL - A Volusia County grand jury releases a presentment that shows five defendants who are now charged with first degree murder.
One of the defendants found on that presentment includes 31-year-old Arrington Turner, who stands accused of gunning down 19-year-old John Phillips in broad daylight at Derbyshire Park. Unlike the four other defendants, Turner is additionally charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Marvin Bryant and Jaide Caporale, a couple from Deltona, are also listed on the grand jury's presentment.
The pair was arrested in early December following months of investigation that began with the discovery of 30-year-old Jo’el Cosby—Caporale's "on-and-off" boyfriend—in August. The investigation into his death found that Bryant and Caporale attempted to cover up the murder by cleaning up the evidence.
Four months after the investigation began, a judge signed warrants for the arrest of Bryant and Caporale. They have been in custody since early December 2020.
Victor Mercado of Deltona will also be charged with first-degree murder. Mercado's charge stems from the murder of his 56-year-old ex-boyfriend Vincent Patterson. Patterson was found dead and in an advancing stage of decomposition back in May after he was attacked by Mercado. Law enforcement later found Mercado in Tampa.
Initially, Mercado was facing a second-degree murder charge. That has since been upgraded to first-degree murder.
34-year-old Vanessa Ann Oostdyk is also listed on the presentment as being charged with first-degree murder. However, the origin of her charges has not been made clear yet. Records from Volusia County Corrections and the Clerk of Courts show that a judge signed two arrest warrants for Oostdyk on December 7th, both carrying a sale of heroin charge.
An email from the Volusia Sheriff's Office says Oostdyk's charge stems from the death of 27-year-old Bridget Persinger back in September 2019. A investigation led Volusia Sheriff’s detectives identified Oostdyk as the person responsible for her death.
Jail records show Oostdyk was processed and booked into jail on December 8th. She remains in custody without bond.
