FHP Looking For Hit-And-Run Driver In Fatal Traffic Accident

UPDATE (January 27) - The driver of the semi-truck is being identified as 30-year-old Lester Jackson of Trenton, Florida.  FHP is reporting that Jackson told them he was disoriented after the crash and ran into the woods. Jackson took himself to Advent Health Daytona Beach for medical care at around 3 a.m. on Sunday (January 26).  FHP said they are still investigating the crash and that charges are pending against Jackson. 

Pierson, FL - Florida Highway Patrol is looking for the driver of  a semi-truck involved in a fatal hit-and-run that happened Saturday (January 25) morning.  They say 56-year-old Carl Gandy died as a reult of the accident that happened on S.R. 40 at Warrensford Road in Pierson around 10:15 a.m. His passenger, 46-year-old Rena Gandy, received minor injuries.

The semi-truck was traveling westbound on S.R. 40 when for unknown reasons, the truck moved to the eastbound lanes. Gandy was traveling eastbound and was hit head-on by the semi-truck.  The semi left the roadway and hit a tree. The driver got out and fled the area on foot.  Gandy's truck caught fire on impact and the medical examiner pronounced  him dead at the scene.  Rena Gandy was able to get out of the truck.

FHP has not released any description of the semi-truck driver.  They say this is an open investigation and charges are pending against that driver.
