Daytona Beach, FL - A Daytona Beach man who spent over seven years in a Florida prison for killing a man while running from the law ends up behind bars again for fleeing from authorities two months after he got his freedom back.

25-year-old John C. Mai Jr. drove a car into the front porch of a home in Daytona Beach's Midtown area after officers tried to pull him over Saturday night (March 16th), according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.

Mai fled from the crash scene on foot but was eventually caught at a nearby apartment complex by Daytona Beach police, said VCSO spokesperson Andrew Gant.

"Mai fled from a deputy doing proactive patrols in the Daytona Beach area around 10:35 p.m. Saturday," Gant stated. "The crew on the Sheriff’s Office helicopter, Air One, had radioed to ground units that they were following a suspicious vehicle. When the deputy attempted a traffic stop, the car took off at high speed."

He nearly hit several vehicles while trying to get away before wrecking the vehicle he was driving at a property on the 200 block of North Caroline Street, per Gant.

"A passenger who also ran from the vehicle was not immediately located," Gant noted.

No injuries were reported.

Mai is now free on $12,500 bond from Volusia County Jail on charges of fleeing and eluding, leaving the scene of a crash with damage, driving with a suspended license, resisting an officer without violence, possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He got out of prison on January 18th after serving most of a 10-year sentence for the January 2010 death of Paul E. Outzen. Authorities say Outzen died after Mai crashed into a car while speeding away from another attempted traffic stop.

Mai was sentenced in May 2011 after pleading no contest to charges of vehicular homicide, aggravated fleeing and grand theft auto. He began serving his prison time two weeks later.

Besides this arrest, Mai was also booked at Volusia County Jail March 7th on charges of operating a vehicle with a suspended license and possession of drug paraphernalia.
