Volusia County families in need of a Christmas tree this holiday season officially have an opportunity to pick one up. The Lyonia Preserve in Deltona will be holding a Christmas tree cutting next month for one day, with an added benefit to help native wildlife.
According to a release from the Volusia County government, the trees made available will be sand pines. These trees, they say, are prone to becoming overgrown and providing a perching space for the Florida scrub jay, a small bird native to the state. Per the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the Florida scrub jay is considered vulnerable, only one step above becoming an officially endangered species.
The tree cutting will take place on Saturday, December 14th from 9:00 am to 10:30 am. Attendees are required to make a reservation by calling (386) 789-7207, ext. 21028. Those wishing to cut down a tree are asked to bring loppers, a hand saw, and gloves. The event takes place at the Lyonia Center (2150 Eustace Ave, Deltona).
Sand pines, a somewhat unconventional choice for a Christmas tree, are often compared to the tree in the Charlie Brown Christmas special, in which the characters hang one ornament on a tiny, humble tree. The sand pines are usually four to five feet tall, with potential growth of up to 20 feet.
