DELAND, Fla. - The Volusia Sheriff's Office has made an arrest in connection to the January overdose death of a woman in Deltona. 23-year-old DeLand resident Nathan LaBeau is accused of selling the deadly narcotic fentanyl to the late victim.
The overdose occurred on Monday, and the victim was rushed to the hospital for her symptoms. She was later pronounced dead at the hospital, and the VSO's Overdose Task Force (ODTF) immediately began an investigation.
The first step in the investigation was an undercover purchase by an ODTF member, in which LeBeau was identified as the suspected drug dealer who contributed to the woman's death. ODTF detectives worked with the East and West Volusia Narcotics Task Forces to arrest LeBeau on Tuesday. They recovered several pills they say shine light on what caused the overdose.
The pills said to be found on LeBeau's person were fentanyl, pressed to resemble ocycodone. The VSO's report on the arrest did not definitively state whether the victim is believed to have known what she was taking, or if she may have a history purchasing drugs from LeBeau.
LeBeau was charged with fentanyl trafficking, fentanyl possession with intent to sell, possession of alprazolam and psilocybin with intent to sell, possession of drug paraphernalia, and usage of a two-way communication device to commit a felony. He was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail with no bond.
