More Signatures Needed To Get Educators On Task Force

Daytona Beach, FL - It’s “Teachers Appreciation Week” but there’s a petition to create an Education Task Force to reopen Florida because teachers say the in-place education subcommittee does not represent them.

The first goal of 6,400 signatures has been achieved on ActionNetwork.org As of this morning, there's a new goal of 12,000. Volusia United Educators President Elizabeth Albert said most of the people on the education subcommittee are businessmen.  "It says you need to have educators and people who are knowledgeable about teaching and learning and schools on this committee. The committee the Governor put together, there were not representatives from these groups in any capacity."

Albert said that the petition asks Commissioner of Education Richard Corcoran to adopt the Florida Education Association's proposal for a task force. "There may have been one teacher, one principal, one superintendent but the majority of the folks on that committee are business folks. We know that unless you're doing the work, you're really not the experts."

This week is 'Teachers Appreciation Week' and Albert said she wants more than the teachers to know how much they are appreciated. "Not only teachers but the paraprofessionals and office specialists who've stepped up during this time to really do what's right for our students and our families and community."
