One person was killed in a Daytona shooting on Tuesday, the Daytona Beach Police Department confirmed. The suspect in the murder, 20-year-old Broward County resident John Oliphant III, is in custody.
According to the DBPD, several people were inside a house on Butler Blvd, a block away from the Daytona Lagoon waterpark. There was reportedly a knock at the door, and two men in masks entered the home after the door was opened.
There was then what the DBPD described as ‘an altercation’ between the occupants and the two men, leading to one person being pistol-whipped and another fatally shot. Both victims were hospitalized, and the pistol-whipped victim is expected to recover.
Though the assailants are said to have fled the scene, the DBPD announced on Tuesday that they’d arrested Oliphant on charges of first degree murder, burglary with battery, and fentanyl trafficking. He’s currently being held at the Volusia County Branch Jail without bond. The DBPD has said they believe the victims and suspects knew each other through drug-related activities and that there is not expected to be another incident.
