New Smyrna Beach, FL - New Smyrna Beach Republican Tom Wright, who won a state Senate seat November 6th after the death of Senator Dorothy Hukill, is making plans to seek re-election in 2022.

Wright opened a campaign account Tuesday to run again in Senate District 14, which is made up of parts of Volusia and Brevard counties, according to the state Division of Elections website.

In October, Republican leaders in both counties chose Wright to run in the midterm election after Hukill, a former Port Orange mayor, died of cancer.

Hukill’s name remained on the ballot, with votes cast for her going to Wright. He received 56.3 percent of the vote in defeating Democrat Melissa Martin and was sworn into the Senate during an organization session Tuesday.

Wright is the second candidate who has opened a campaign account to run for a Senate seat in 2022, joining former Republican Senator John Legg, who has opened an account in Senate District 10, which currently is made up of Citrus, Hernando and part of Pasco counties.

District boundaries are likely to change because of redistricting after the 2020 Census.
