Financial Literacy Bill Filed In Honor Of Late Senator Hukill

Tallahassee, FL - A new bill filed in the Florida Senate seeks to honor late Senator Dorothy Hukill by requiring high school students to take financial literacy courses.

Fellow Republican Senator Travis Hutson of St. Augustine - whose district also covers all of Flagler County and the northern part of Volusia County - filed the proposal (SB 114) for consideration during the 2019 legislative session, which starts in March.

Under the bill, students entering ninth grade beginning in the 2019-2020 school year would be required to earn one-half credit in personal financial literacy and money management.

The courses would include discussion of such issues as balancing checkbooks, completing loan applications and computing interest rates.

The bill is named the “Dorothy L. Hukill Financial Literacy Act” after the Port Orange Republican who died of cancer in October.

Hukill long championed financial literacy efforts during her time in Tallahassee.

A memorial service in her honor is set for next week in the Florida Senate chamber.

New Smyrna Beach Republican Tom Wright won Hukill's District 14 seat in November, beating out Democrat Mel Martin despite having Hukill's name on the ballot.
