DeLand's Georgia Avenue Grand Re-Opening To Include Street Party

DeLand, FL – Georgia Avenue is set to reopen to the public following a facelift that included the addition of brick pavers, infrastructure upgrades, and reconstructed sidewalks.

The reopening will include a block party from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 28. Festivities will include vendors selling hot dogs and ice cream on Georgia Avenue. Live music entertainment, costumed characters, raffle prize drawings and kid’s activities will also be available.

Mayor Robert F. Apgar will be joined by other city officials and area stakeholders to officially cut the ribbon for Georgia Avenue around 5:20 p.m. Saturday.

The celebration culminates what ended up being a four-year process to revitalize Georgia Avenue as well as improve the area’s infrastructure with the installation of new stormwater drains and utilities. Removable bollards have also been added to provide safety for pedestrians during events on Georgia like the Artisan Alley Farmers Market held every Friday evening.

Though not originally a part of the Streetscape project, downtown merchants are funding the eventual installation of festoon lighting across Georgia Avenue to add to the ambiance.

As part of the improvements, crews repaved one of the adjacent alleys, which is home to the “Wings” mural. That passageway has since been renamed, Persimmon Lane. The city is also in the process of repaving and beautifying the parking lot on the west end of Georgia Avenue.
