DeBary, FL-Biologist Mallory Brooks will address microplastics in the marine environment at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at DeBary Hall Historic Site, 198 Sunrise Blvd., DeBary.

Microplastics are tiny plastic particles that can come from cosmetics, personal cleansers, sewage sludge, and the deterioration of larger plastic fragments. When they find their way into coastal waters, they can be ingested by crustaceans and other filter feeders, which are vital components of the marine food web. Because the distribution and effects of microplastics are largely unknown, environmental groups are advocating for a global assessment.

Brooks coordinates the H2O Project at the Marine Discovery Center in New Smyrna Beach. The project was launched in December to educate the public about problems and solutions concerning local waters.

Her presentation is part of the Lemonade Lectures series, which is sponsored by the Enterprise Historical Conservancy and Volusia County. Light refreshments and lemonade will be served.
