Volusia County, FL-After the weekend wild fires that popped up all over the area, it seems only fitting that this is Wildfire Awareness Week in Florida. Florida Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam asking residents to be aware and be careful and that's a message that resonates with Julie Allen with the Florida Fire Service in the Bunnell District. That district covers St. Johns, Flagler, and Volusia Counties. Allen says there have been about 800 wildfires statewide since January burning more than 13,500 acres and, she says, that's not including the most recent wildfires here. Fire officials say most of those fires were caused by people.
Allen points out that the area isn't currently experiencing drought conditions and says the weekend weather, dry and windy, really caused most of the fire danger here. Fire officials urge local homeowners to clean off the roofs of their homes and maintain 30 feet of defensible space around their homes. The biggest wildfire here over the weekend was near Champions Elementary School on LPGA Boulevard in Daytona Beach. That fire burned more than 100 acres.
