DeLand, FL - A wanted man with a box cutter in DeLand, who was reportedly suicidal, was taken into custody after trying to flee from officials, according to Volusia County Sheriff's Office (VCSO). Deputies responded to a call just before 6 PM on Thursday regarding a 29-year-old man, who was wanted for armed burglary and was found in his truck at an address on May St. in DeLand. DeLand Police and VCSO found the truck with the man inside, and the man fled in the vehicle, continuing at low speeds through the city's streets. The driver disregarded several traffic signals and stop signs and continued to drive after deputies attempted to stop the truck with stop sticks, according to VCSO. Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood was in the area and was also contacted by the man's mother. Chitwood was able to make phone contact with the man, who eventually agreed to stop fleeing. When the man stopped the truck, deputies found that he was armed with a box-cutter and had lacerations on both of his wrists. The man held the knife to his own throat and refused to come away from the vehicle, according to VCSO. After about two hours of negotiations, he began to exit the truck. The man attempted to stab himself, and Chitwood grabbed his hand and tried to take away the box cutter. The man struggled as he was taken into custody, and deputies had to use Tasers while they apprehended him. The man was treated for his injuries on scene and was then transported to Halifax Health in Daytona for further treatment, according to VCSO. There was no loss of life, in this case, no injuries to law enforcement, and no injuries to any other members of the public. Copyright Southern Stone Communications 2017.
