Volusia County, FL - At its Thursday meeting, the Volusia County Council will decide whether or not to approve a loan of $7 million to cover a portion of the cost of a new Sheriff's Office evidence facility.
The plans for a new Sheriff's Office evidence facility have been in the works for several years since the current facility is aging and out-of-date, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office. The proposed site for the new facility is 10 acres off of Tiger Bay Rd., near the Sheriff's Office Training Facility. Construction has not yet begun, but the building would be about 35,000 square feet.
Original estimates for the project were over $13 million, and County staff is recommending a measure to obtain a loan with CenterState Bank to cover more than half of those costs. The loan would be fixed rate and would be paid in semi-annual installments at an interest rate of 2.87% for 20 years. Money from the loan would go toward infrastructure costs of the new facility, according to County records.
The County Council is also expected to vote on whether or not to spend $132,930 for safety upgrades to the historic Daytona Beach Courthouse clock tower on Atlantic Ave. The historic landmark is made of coquina stone and was constructed in the 1930's.
