Volusia County, FL - On Tuesday, the Volusia County Council will vote on a $5.1 million agreement with the Florida Departments of Economic Opportunity and Transportation to widen a mile-long stretch of Williamson Blvd. in Daytona Beach to four lanes. The stretch of roadway along Williamson Blvd. from LPGA Blvd. to Strickland Range Rd. is currently two lanes, but if the agreement is approved by the Council, the roadway is expected to be expanded to four lanes within five years of approval. The project would partially use money from a Florida Job Growth Grant Fund. The Council submitted a proposal for the roadway expansion in August of last year after Governor Rick Scott announced that Enterprise Florida and the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity were accepting proposals for the grant fund. Now, the Council must approve a budget resolution appropriating the funds in order to move the project along. The project would use $1,961,564 from the State grant for the construction phase, according to County records. $1,342,393 would be funded from the County's local option gas tax, and $1,796,043 would come from funds committed by private development in a development transportation agreement. Another item the County Council is expected to vote on is a contract to partially replace the roof of the historic County Courthouse in downtown DeLand. The $341,778 contract would be with Tydir Construction Company in Daytona and would replace the south roof of the courthouse, located at 125 W. New York Ave. Following Tuesday's regular meeting of the County Council, there will also be a special meeting between the County Council and the Daytona Beach Shores City Council. The meeting will include discussions on whether or not the County can agree to purchase future parking areas only on the west side of A1A and how the City's recently enacted beach parking ordinance (read more here) will affect future County parking projects west of A1A.
