Volusia Sheriff & Unions Call For Firing Of County Manager

Daytona Beach, FL - Volusia County's Sheriff wants the county manager gone right away even though he plans to retire in the next six months.

Through a media release from the Volusia County's Sheriff Office this morning, Sheriff Mike Chitwood announced that he will show up to tomorrow’s Volusia County Council meeting to "call for the termination or immediate resignation" of Jim Dinneen.

Chitwood plans to speak to the VCC members during public comments, which are usually held at 9:30 a.m., 30 minutes before the meeting's scheduled start time.

The meetings are held at the Frank T. Bruno Jr. County Council Chambers (Room 204) at the Thomas C. Kelly Administration Center in DeLand (123 West Indiana Avenue).

Chitwood has been openly critical of Dinneen for much of his tenure since being elected in 2016.

On his Facebook account yesterday, Chitwood said Dinneen has "lost any moral or ethical standing to lead this county" and that "if the County Council allows him to stay, our elected representatives will have abdicated their constitutional responsibilities and will be fully complicit with this corrupt, shady administration."

Chitwood also called on Volusia County residents to come to the meeting and express their point of view.

This move comes four days after the Volusia County Deputies Association created a petition on Change.org calling for Dinneen's immediate firing. As of this morning, it has nearly 2,000 signatures.

Three other local law enforcement unions have joined VCDA in their push. Click here to read a joint letter released by them earlier today.

How long Dinneen will stay has been added to the agenda for tomorrow's meeting.

VCC District 4 Representative Heather Post - another frequent and outspoken critic of Dinneen - took to Facebook on Sunday saying she will make a motion for Dinneen to be immediately terminated despite his retirement announcement.
