Pierson, FL - Volusia County Schools will soon be breaking ground on the new replacement school for Pierson Elementary.

At 9 AM on Thursday, June 1, the beginning of construction will be celebrated at the new school site, 657 Center Street, Pierson. The 90,791 square foot school will be in an area of about 24 acres, 1 mile north of the current Pierson Elementary school and Taylor Middle-High School.

The 1/2 cent sales tax funded, $18.5 million project is expected to be open in August 2018. It will serve the same kids as the current school and is projected to hold a capacity of 687 students from kindergarten to grade 5.

The new school will be lead by current principle, Kimberly Hutcherson. There will be two school buildings that will include 35 classrooms, a cafeteria and auditorium, art rooms, music rooms, a media center, an outdoor stage and a pavillion for physical education classes.

The new buildings promise a 21st Century school with aspects of higher learning and the incorpooration of wishes from students, parents, faculty, staff and the community. The exterior of the building will architecturally honor Pierson and Seville's fern industry.

A sculpture called Ferns & Family from Tom Allocco, a previous art teacher at Pierson, will be in the reception area of the new school. The 1988 work is still at the current Pierson school.

The architect of the project is BRPH Architects & Engineers, Inc. and it will be contracted by the Welbro Building Corporation. The project is expected to officially begin on June 2.
