Volusia County, FL - In response to the Marjory Stoneman-Douglas shooting in February, many counties, including Volusia, are in the process of putting School Guardians on every campus.

Volusia County Schools Chief Operating Officer Greg Akin said there are 49 campuses, including 5 charter schools in Volusia County. The application period was reopened on Tuesday of this week and closes Thursday. Akin said he believes that 60 applications have already come in. Akin said the hiring process is extensive, beginning with an interview, followed by background screening, including drug testing, fingerprinting, a psychological evaluation and a polygraph test. Those that make it that far are then completely vetted by the Volusia County Sheriff's Office. According to Akin, every campus in Volusia County will be covered for the start of school on August 13.
