Volusia County, FL-A contract was approved today by the Volusia County Council for some major changes at Daytona Beach International Airport. Director Rick Karl said that Michael Baker International is the architectural and engineering firm chosen for the updates at DBIA.  Karl said that they have done work at 20 of the 25 top airports in the U.S and around the world. Karl said they are the best choice because they understand the process of this very complicated job.

County Manager Jim Dinneen said hiring Michael Baker International helps with the goal of staying competitive in the changing world of air travel. Changes and renovations will encourage travelers to choose DBIA.

Dinneen also thinks that airlines want a better ground experience for their passengers and bringing in the amenities will attract airlines. He also wants the public to understand that there's a difference between borrowing money in the airport fund and having debt against taxes. Dinneen said that this will have no negative affect on taxes.

The work is expected to begin in 2017.
