Posted
rain on asphalt Volusia and Flagler Counties, FL - Volusia County and Flagler County Schools will be open tomorrow, but all after-school events and athletic activities, indoor and outdoor, are cancelled due to now Hurricane Hermine. (The storm was upgraded after this article was published) Dismissal time and extended day services won't be affected. Officials say they will continue to monitor the situation and announce any additional changes to the school schedule. "We are waiting  to make a decision for Friday," said Nancy Wait, Public Information Officer for Volusia County Schools. VCS will get several updates from the Emergency Operation Center on Thursday, and based on that information a decision for Friday will be made and announced to students and parents. Info will be posted on MyVolusiaSchools.org, and on the VCS Facebook and Twitter pages. If a school is closed, phone calls will be made to parents. If wind speeds get too high (35 mph), bus routes may be cancelled, so any parents with children riding the bus to and from school should keep a very close eye on how the tropical storm progresses. According to Wait, "school is the safest place to be. Most of our schools are shelters, so we expect learning to go on." td 9 1
