Volusia County Beach Safety To Hold Tryouts For Summer Lifeguards

Volusia County, FL - Volusia County's Beach Safety Division is calling all those who are interested in becoming a lifeguard this summer to try out in February and in March. The Beach Safety Division is looking to hire 150 part-time lifeguards for the beaches this summer. All applicants must be at least 16-years-old on or before June 1, and applicants must be able to swim a 500-meter freestyle in under 10 minutes and 15 seconds. Candidates must undergo a background check, physical, and drug screening, according to Volusia County Beach Safety. The pay for starting lifeguards is $11.44 per hour, and there may be a $500 incentive for lifeguards who meet certain criteria for the number of weekend work days. Tryouts for lifeguards will be on the following days:
  • Feb. 17: 8 AM to 11 AM at the Ormond Beach YMCA, 500 Sterthaus Drive, Ormond Beach; and noon to 3 PM at the Cypress Aquatic Center, 981 George W. Engram Blvd., Daytona Beach
  • Feb. 24: 8 AM to 11 AM at the Port Orange YMCA, 4701 City Center Parkway, Port Orange; and noon to 3 PM at the Cypress Aquatic Center
  • March 3: 8 AM to 11 AM at the Ormond Beach YMCA; and 1 PM to 4 PM at the Cypress Aquatic Center
  • March 10: 8 AM to 11 AM at the Port Orange YMCA; and 1 PM to 3 PM at the Cypress Aquatic Center
For those who meet the requirements, there is a required 40-hour first-responder and CPR class. Those who qualify must also attend recruit classes on the following days:
  • Class 1: 8 AM to 4 PM March 12-17
  • Class 2: 8 AM to 4 PM April 7, 8, 15, 16, 21, and 22
