Volusia and Flagler Counties, FL - Schools in Volusia and Flagler Counties are ready to welcome students back after dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew.
Both school districts are opening schools on Wednesday, October 12, which is an early release day.
There was some damage to Volusia County and Flagler County schools, but nothing catastrophic. Crews have been working nonstop to prepare for the students to return. Officials from both counties say the schools are prepared to welcome students back on Wednesday morning. "We had some water intrusion at some of our sites, we lost power at a lot of our sites, we've had some roof damage and some awning damage," said Jacob Oliva, Superintendent of Flagler County Schools. "But our crews have been working around the clock since Saturday to get our schools up and running. Our schools are clear, they're safe, and they'll be ready for students to return."
Buses have been repaired and are ready to safely bring students to school. In both counties, bus routes were tested "to make sure that they were accessible for our buses and that students could get to their bus stops," said Nancy Wait, Director of Community Information for Volusia County Schools.
