VCSO: Woman Leaves Baby In Car Outside Beauty Shop

Posted

Orange City, FL - A sharp-eyed passerby spots an unattended baby inside a car near a beauty supply store, leading to the eventual arrest of a 33-year-old woman on a child neglect charge.

That passerby called 911 around 3:15 this afternoon from the parking lot of Cosmo Prof at 2403 Enterprise Road in Orange City, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office. That's close to where Enterprise meets U.S. 17.

VCSO spokesperson Andrew Gant says witnesses were able to get into the unlocked vehicle, pulling the 8-month-old boy out safely.

"Deputies and firefighters who arrived on scene confirmed that the boy was in good health and good spirits," Gant added. "Deputies spent several minutes looking for the adult responsible for the baby."

That person - identified as Meagan Burgess - arrived on-scene around 24 minutes after the 911 call came in, per Gant.

"Burgess told deputies she had forgotten the baby was in the car, as she had just dropped off several other children with a family member in DeBary," Gant noted. "She said leaving the baby in the vehicle was her worst fear."

The relationship between Burgess and the baby wasn't made clear by VCSO.

Burgess is held without bond at Volusia County Jail. A quick search of VCJ records showed no prior bookings.
