Volusia County, FL -The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office (VCSO) is now accepting applications to its seven-week Citizens Academy, a course intended to teach civilians about the training and tools VCSO deputies use while serving and protecting the community.

Applications must be submitted no later than February 23 to be considered for the spring Citizens Academy. The course will begin on Tuesday, April 3, from 6 to 9 PM, and will end with a graduation and reception on Saturday, May 19. Applications returned after February 23 will be considered for a future Citizens Academy.

The academy is comprised of 10 sessions of instruction from deputies, practical exercises, and demonstrations. Participants will learn more about the VCSO’s Marine, Motors, K-9, Dive Team, Air One, patrol, and major cases units. Citizens will also be able to explore the VCSO’s Use of Force Training which includes Firearms Safety, Shoot/No Shoot, Defensive Tactics & Scenario, and Active Shooter Training.

Participants can expect to ride alongside a deputy as they demonstrate navigating a road course at high speeds and in varying weather conditions. After the demonstration, participants will then have the opportunity to drive the patrol car and navigate the road course themselves. To watch a clip of 2017 VCSO Citizens Academy click here.
