Deltona, FL - The Volusia County Sheriff's Office is conducting a high-visibility enforcement operation designed to reduce the number of traffic crashes involving vehicles striking pedestrians and bicyclists.
The operation if funded by a $30,000 state grant and 8 heavily-trafficked areas of Deltona are being educated to promote safety.
"Our roadways can be dangerous places for pedestrians," said Sheriff Mike Chitwood. "We need to reduce the carnage on our roads and make them safer for everyone."
About a dozen deputies have been trained in pedestrian and bicycle safety for the operation, which will be conducted in 2 phases. During phase 1, deputies will stop violators and explain the violation with literature and a verbal warning. During phase 2, deputies will begin ticketing violators.
The operation will consist of 4 deputies at a time, working targeted locations for 2-hours periods, with a total of 83 operations over the next 2 months.
The following areas were selected based on crash data and they all include traffic signals and marked pedestrian crosswalks.
Results from today's launch of the operation are as follows:
Saxon Boulevard & North Normandy Boulevard
Saxon Boulevard & West Finland Drive
The VCSO reported that 2 of the citations (both for violation of a traffic control signal device) involved motorists who nearly struck the decoy who was walking across the street.
