New Smyrna Beach, FL – A Volusia County Sheriff’s deputy serving as a school resource officer is reassigned to courthouse duty.
Sheriff Mike Chitwood said in a Twitter post that Deputy Anthony Abato is a ‘good man who works hard’ but ‘we just have to be able to stop what we’re doing and handle ANY call about a possible gun on or near a school campus with the HIGHEST priority & urgency.’
I know this deputy is a good man who works hard. We just have to be able to stop what we're doing and handle ANY call about a possible gun on or near a school campus w/ the HIGHEST priority & urgency. Deputy is reassigned while we review everything that happened here. https://t.co/shvYNezZB7

The transfer comes after an incident at New Smyrna Beach High School last Thursday in which a student was reported by another student to have a gun. The school was put on lockdown.
The incident is under investigation.
