UPDATE (10-10-18): FHP has identified the woman as Amy Sojka of Ormond Beach.

Earlier reporting below.

Ormond Beach, FL - A Volusia County sheriff's deputy is on paid administrative leave as investigators look into a traffic accident which sent a 38-year-old woman to the hospital.

The woman - yet to be identified by the Sheriff's Office or Florida Highway Patrol - is in critical but stable condition at Halifax Health Medical Center following the accident around 7:30 p.m. tonight (October 9th) on Hand Avenue near Chelsea Place Avenue.

VCSO spokesperson Andrew Gant says the woman was initially taken to Florida Hospital Memorial in Ormond Beach, which is just a short distance southwest of the accident scene.

"The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash," Gant added. "The deputy is 21 years old and was hired in 2017."

He's since been identified by FHP as Patrick Erlandson.

Troopers tell us Deputy Erlandson was driving his VCSO-issued vehicle - a 2013 Ford Taurus - west on Hand when he struck the woman with the left front side of the vehicle as she was walking on the middle of the road.

Per the FHP report, the deputy "was unable" to see the woman and it's not clear at this point why the woman was walking on the road.

Deputy Erlandson wasn't injured and showed no signs of alcohol or drug impairment at the scene, per FHP. Troopers are still trying to determine if alcohol or drugs were a factor for the woman.
