Volusia County, FL - The Volusia County Sheriff's deputy who was under investigation for allegedly taking money from defendants he had arrested for DUI resigned on Monday.

VCSO says Deputy John Braman turned in his letter of resignation on Monday, January 30, and it's effective immediately.

The FL Department of Law Enforcement was conducting a criminal investigation, aong with the State Attorney's Office, into allegations that Braman had been stealing money from criminal defendants. Several defendants who had been arrested by Braman for DUI made similar allegations, and the 33-year-old deputy was placed on administrative leave with pay on Wednesday, January 25, 2017.

Braman was hired by VCSO on January 1, 2007. Sheriff Mike Chitwood said he was very disappointed to make the announcement. “Integrity is the cornerstone of any law enforcement officer’s career," said Chitwood. "Once you lose your integrity, you’ve lost your ability to be an effective law enforcement officer.”

Chitwood's full statement can be seen here.
