vcso logo Deltona, FL - One of the women who was allegedly robbed by 3 men in the parking lot of a Deltona Winn-Dixie last week is now in custody after investigators say she was trying to sell drugs to one of those men. 53-year-old Magalys Mejias of Deltona was arrested Thursday at her Daroca Drive home. She's held on $20,000 bond at Volusia County Jail on charges of child neglect and using a 2-way communication device to commit a felony. Volusia County Sheriff's Office spokesman Gary Davidson says Mejias was the woman who chased a truck with those 3 men inside after the robbery last Friday morning (March 4th) at the Winn-Dixie on Howland Boulevard and eventually rammed into that truck with her own vehicle to stop them from fleeing the scene. "During interviews with deputies, [Mejias and a woman in her vehicle] insisted that they had never seen the men before and didn’t know who they were," Davidson noted. "However, during questioning, all 3 men admitted they had gone to a prearranged meeting at the Winn-Dixie plaza to buy pills." VCSO was able to corroborate that story after one of the men let investigators search his cell phone, according to Davidson. "It showed a series of phone calls to and from a phone number that the defendant said he had called to set up the drug deal," Davidson stated. "The phone number has been linked to Mejias, with the calls taking place just minutes before the encounter." When confronted with this new information on Tuesday, Mejias changed her story, per Davidson. "She told investigators that a second phone and a bottle of prescription painkillers might have been stolen as well," Davidson added. "This was new information that she hadn’t mentioned during the first interview. Also, when asked if she spoke to anyone on the phone while on the way to the Winn-Dixie, she admitting [to] talking to someone. But she insisted the discussion had nothing to do with selling drugs." Mejias' passenger told VCSO during her interview that Mejias admitted to her after the incident that she went there to sell pills. "One of the male defendants told investigators that he actually bought some pills from Mejias and that the altercation occurred when she realized that he hadn’t paid the full amount for the drugs," Davidson said. The passenger in Mejias' vehicle won't be charged because VCSO believes she didn't know she was involved in a drug deal at the time. Click here for more background on the story. magalys mejias
