VCSO: Deltona Middle Student Faked School Violence Report

Deltona, FL - Another Volusia County public school student is in trouble for making a false report of a school shooting.

A Deltona Middle School student now faces a felony charge, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.

VCSO spokesman Andrew Gant says the 14-year-old boy told friends a school shooting was taking place when it really wasn't.

"He sent a text message about an active shooter and then sent out a video of running feet to make the story seem real," Gant added. "He later told a school resource deputy he did it as a prank and he didn't want to dispel the rumor for several hours because he wanted to give the impression that it was actually happening in real time."

VCSO announced the charge late last night and said the teenager will be in court this morning.

Over 30 students in Volusia County have been charged with making false reports of school violence since 17 people were shot and killed last February at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.
