VCSO: Daytona Beach Motel 6 Ex-Employee Arrested After Stealing $37K

Daytona Beach, FL – Volusia County Sheriff’s Office (VCSO) detectives have arrested a Daytona Beach Motel 6 ex-employee who is believed to have stolen over $37,000 from his employer. On Tuesday, 27-year-old Edward Whitney was taken into custody after an investigation revealed he had stolen a total of $37,304 from the Motel 6 in Daytona Beach during his employment there from August 2017 to November 2017. Whitney was fired on November 2 after his boss realized the motel’s credit balance was negative and that the $37,000 had been refunded to two debit cards during Whitney’s shift. During his employment, Whitney was in charge of checking in guests, receiving payments and providing refunds, enabling him to have access to the motel’s businesses credit and debit card machine. On November 27, VCSO detectives interviewed Whitney about his termination. Whitney said he was fired because he let housekeeping employees stay at the motel without paying. Detectives found that the debit cards the money was refunded to belonged to Whitney. 63 transaction from the motel credit card to Whitney’s debit cards were discovered. The $37,000 spent includes:
  • 3 debits to Royal Caribbean Cruise lines (totaling $9,319.89)
  • 2 debits to Ticket Master (totaling $2,486.82)
  • 6 debits to Expedia.com (totaling $1,395.21)
  • 2 debits for airfare (totaling $230.40)
  • 3 debits to WU GoCredit (totaling $1425.85)
  • 2 FPL debits (totaling $711.39)
  • 2 debits to Jan Jewelers (totaling $1246.64)
  • 7 debits to Southern Nights Orlando (totaling $521.29)
  • 5 checks withdrawn (totaling $11,000)
  • miscellaneous debits
Whitney was charged with obtaining property by fraud over $20,000, grand theft, and theft by an employee.
