DeLand, FL - Volusia Sheriff’s deputies arrested a 20-year-old man over the weekend after he trespassed onto the campus of a DeLand middle school to charge his phone.

At around 3:30 PM on Sunday, VCSO deputies arrived at Southwestern Middle School, located at 605 West New Hampshire Avenue, after a burglary alarm was tripped. Deputies saw a white man wearing a gray t-shirt and tan shorts walking through school grounds.

The 20-year-old man, who later identified himself as Elliot Haupt, climbed over the fence and approached deputies. Deputies then placed Haupt in handcuffs.

Haupt told deputies that he was walking through the school as a shortcut and that he had only charged his phone while on campus. He said that he was leaving as deputies arrived so he decided to walk towards them so he would not seem suspicious.

The principal, Holly Smith, told deputies that she wished to pursue charges on the school’s behalf. Haupt was then arrested, taken into custody, and charged with trespassing on school property.
