VCSO Accepting Applications For Deputy Sheriff Sponsorship Program

Volusia County, FL - The Volusia County Sheriff's Office (VCSO) is now accepting applications for its Deputy Sheriff Sponsorship Program, which helps economically challenged residents who want to become law enforcement officers by paying for selected, qualified candidates to attend a basic law enforcement academy. Those who are eligible may get the opportunity to attend the Basic Law Enforcement Academy at Daytona State College. The Deputy Sheriff Sponsorship Program can help pay for tuition, books, and lab fees for the Academy. Laura Williams, Public Information Officer for VCSO says that this is not a new program and that it has been in place for about 10 years. "We are renewing our effort to attract good quality candidates who might not be able to afford to pay for school on their own but still want to be a good deputy," says Williams. VCSO is trying to attract five quality candidates for the program. As a part of the program, selected candidates will be offered a full-time job at the Sheriff’s Office as a Special Worker, earning $10 an hour for 40 hours a week, while enrolled in the academy, according to VCSO. After the candidates receive their law enforcement certification, they will earn the distinction of becoming reserve deputies, earning reserve deputy pay and benefits. “This is your chance. If you want to become a deputy sheriff but think you can’t afford it, we can help,” says Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood. “We’re looking for quality candidates and this program can make that dream come true.” You can apply for the Deputy Sheriff Sponsorship Program and learn more about the requirements by clicking on Volusia County's Career website here. Applications for the program must be received by February 5. Copyright Southern Stone Communications 2018.
