Volusia County, FL - Volusia County will begin a $5 million project to renovate and widen the boardwalk through Smyrna Dunes Park and is continuing work on a riverside fishing pier at the park.

Demolition and construction for the boardwalk project will begin in June and is slated to be complete by summer 2018. The 2-mile elevated boardwalk will have multiple observation platforms, shaded picnic pavilions with benches, and handicapped-accessible walkways leading to the inlet, river and beaches.

Boardwalk demolition and construction will take place in phases, and renovated boardwalk sections will be re-opened for access as soon as possible.

Temporary pedestrian detours onto natural trails around boardwalk construction areas will be established and marked to maintain public access along the boardwalk route throughout the park. ADA pedestrian access to the boardwalk will be maintained to the greatest extent possible during construction.

Additionally, construction of a 350-foot long riverside fishing pier is underway at Smyrna Dunes Park. It is slated to be open by Memorial Day.

The pier features concrete pilings, two large shade structures, multiple benches and a handrail designed for handicapped-accessible fishing.

Smyrna Dunes Park is one of Volusia County's most popular coastal parks. Located on 184 acres of land on the south side of Ponce de Leon Inlet in New Smyrna Beach, the park is bordered by water on 3 sides and is a haven for people who enjoy fishing, swimming and sunbathing. It's also one of the few parks where people can bring their leashed pets to the river and inlet beaches.
