Varn Park Closed For Dune Resoration

Flagler Beach, FL - A local park is closed to the public for Flagler County's dune restoration project.

Nearly six miles of dunes have already been fortified, the completed area stretching from Washington Oaks Gardens State Park all the way to Jungle Hut Park and sections of Painters Hill.

The next one on the list is Varn Park.

The new section of the dune restoration project will take up the 1.4 miles of beach north of Varn Park and move south according to the project administrator for construction Alex Spiller.

It will take crews several weeks, if not months to complete the work from the Varn Park staging area. High tides, daylight, and weather will affect how much work they can get done.

"Our staff has been working diligently to keep this project on track," said County Commission Chair Greg Hansen. "We know it's a hardship when we have to close a park like this, and we appreciate everyone's patience."

Parks are now open in areas where the work has been completed, one of those now being Jungle Hut Park.

Mobi-Mats, which are devices that protect the recently fortified dunes, have also been placed at the finished parks.

Mobi-Mats also provide a beach access pathway for people with all disabilities, including those in wheelchairs.

Also installed on the finished beaches are signs reminding residents to "Dodge the Dunes" and help protect the newly fortified areas.
