Orange City, FL - The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office (VCSO) has brought animal cruelty charges against a 17-year-old University High School student after he allegedly bit off a chicken’s head.

According to the VCSO, the school’s resource deputy identified the 17-year-old student after hearing about a student who was bragging about the crime. On Saturday, the 17-year-old trespassed onto campus at around 11 PM. He allegedly entered a chicken coup that was present at the school for a “Farm to Table” that occurred earlier in the day.

On Monday, a teacher saw the headless body of a chicken in the school’s parking lot. The decapitated head of the chicken was found in the chicken coup and officials say that eggs were thrown at the gym doors.

The student was ultimately charged with both animal cruelty and trespassing. He was turned over to his mother on Tuesday and is due in court on Wednesday. The VCSO says charges may be brought against any student found to be involved in the incident.
