DeLeon Springs, FL - Two local men, ages 79 and 88, are recovering from minor injuries after the small plane they were in hit the ground and flipped Sunday afternoon.

The hard landing took place around 3:30 p.m. in an open field on Johnson Lake Road in DeLeon Springs.  79-year-old Herbert Weems of Holly Hill was the pilot.  He told Volusia County Sheriff's deputies that an engine malfunction forced the landing.  Herbert also said that he misjudged the slope of the ground which damaged the front tire, causing the plane to flip.

It's been reported that the flight was a birthday ride for Kenneth Brownell of Lake Helen.  He'll turn 89 on October 3rd.  Both men were transported by EVAC to Florida Hospital Deland.
