Two Local Nature Organizations Looking For Volunteers

Volusia County, FL - Two local organizations focused on nature are looking for some volunteers.

Both the Marine Science Center in New Smyrna Beach and the Environmental Discovery Center in Ormond Beach are looking to enlist the help of anyone interested in their local programs.

EDC volunteers will be exposed to a number of available opportunities, according to the facility's coordinator.

"We're looking for volunteers for volunteers over the age of 16," says Annie Evert, the EDC coordinator. "We offer a variety of opportunities for our volunteers such as exhibit greeter or docent."

Evert says that for those who love nature or those who care about the environment, EDC would be a great place for them.

She says that EDC will help volunteers with those interests learn more about the environment and is a good resume builder for those wanting to work in nature sciences.

"We're a very flexible organization so any help is greatly appreciated, we don't require a certain number of hours, we're happy with any help anyone is able to give us." Evert commented.

For those looking for more of a hands-on experience with animals, then the Marine Science Center would be their best bet.

Chad Macfie, the manager at MSC, says they're looking for volunteers to help take care of exhibit animals in their bird sanctuary and aquariums.

"A lot of the things the volunteers would be doing will be helping out with the husbandry of our animals," Macfie explained. "That includes enrichment, playing with the birds and hanging out with the birds so they feel comfortable in their environment."

Macfie also commented that for anyone looking for a job or career in the husbandry field, such as working at a professional zoo, this a great place to learn and help get a foot in the door.

MSC volunteers must be 18 years or older and need no prior experience in the industry,

"We train most of our volunteers in house, the don't really need any skills," Macfie said. "You just need a love for animals and a commitment to our volunteer program, which is four hours a week."
