Two Dead In Head-On Collision Near DeLand

DeLand, FL-Update: FHP identifies the man killed in a head-on collision near DeLand Tuesday night as 33-year-old Dustin Hayes of Deltona.

Earlier reporting follows: FHP says two people died in a head-on collision Tuesday night near DeLand. FHP PIO Sgt. Kim Montes says a vehicle was westbound on East New York Avenue near Jesse Michael Drive when it crossed into the oncoming lane for an unknown reason. That 2002 Chrysler hit an eastbound vehicle. That happened around 8:50 PM.

The two dead were in the westbound vehicle. A 33-year-old driver was killed. His name has not been released pending notice to next of kin. His passenger, 31-year-old Rita Michaud of Sanford, was also killed.

57-year-old William Hellums of Port Orange was driving the vehicle hit head on. He is hospitalized with serious injuries at Florida Hospital DeLand.

The crash remains under investigation.
