Two Beachgoers Hospitalized After Vehicle Hits Them

New Smyrna Beach, FL - Charges are pending on an elderly man after he struck two people with his vehicle on the sands of New Smyrna Beach, sending them both to the hospital.

Volusia County Beach Safety says it happened around 1:15 p.m. today near Esther Street Park, located just north of the Flagler Avenue beach approach.

VCBS Captain Andrew Ethridge tells us the driver - identified only as a 78-year-old from Mount Dora - apparently had some sort of medical episode while behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Monte Carlo, leading him to move out of the traffic lane at low speed.

"[The vehicle struck] two pedestrians as he traveled southbound on the beach," Ethridge added. "His vehicle was stopped by a passenger within his car in conjunction with a nearby pedestrian who reached into the vehicle to shift it into park."

One of the people hit was a 44-year-old Canadian woman from Montreal and the other was a 35-year-old man from Oviedo.

"The victims suffered non-life threatening injuries and were transported to Halifax [Health Medical Center] for medical treatment," Ethridge noted. "The victims are not related and were not known to each other."

The driver didn't need medical care at the scene, according to Ethridge.

If there's any charges, they won't be filed until the accident is thoroughly investigated, per Ethridge.
