Volusia County, FL-A temporary 4-way traffic signal has been on flash since Monday and is expected to go into full operation Wednesday at the intersection near DeLand where four people died in a crash earlier this month. The victims were a grandmother and three grandchildren. The light is at S.R. 44 and Grand Avenue.

Jen Horton with FDOT says drivers should use caution through the area where the speed limit has been reduced from 55 MPH to 45 MPH to accommodate the traffic signals and upcoming construction there.

The light is going up at the request of county officials after the fatal accident. Sheriff Ben Johnson went before Volusia County Council to make the plea for action. Johnson said there had been fatal accidents there over the years.

The April fatal accident happened when FHP investigators say a vehicle pulled into the path of the oncoming Jeep Wrangler driven by the grandmother. The three children were all in car seats. The Jeep overturned and caught fire.

FDOT had planned to construct a traffic roundabout there and those plans are moving forward.
